TORRES DEL PAINE

Residential, 2019

Torres del Paine is a luxury vacation home for a small family located in the Torres del Paine National Park in the Patagonia region of Chile. The brief was to create a small house in an extreme weather location.

The house is divided by a main hallway which separates social spaces from private ones, while maintaining openness to guarded views of the exterior, allowing light to come in while shileded from the elements. Each corridor in the house is focused towards a visual pause, mostly windows or artwork, allowing the user to pace themselves while moving throughout the house. Artificial and natural light is used to create rhythm and emphasize design elements and textures.

TOWARDS

Part of the journey is the end. Hallways are normally created to guide the user towards a desired point in the location, and they are commonly considered a liminal space. Torres del Paine emphasizes hallways as a way to create rhythm as the user experiences the building, giving them opportunities to make decisions based on their desired destination. However, all of the hallways are placed so that the exterior is always visible without compromising privacy for the users inside, through carefully placed exterior walls and obstructions.
